Girls don’t receive prom dresses days before big dance

Just days from the big dance, teens in one New Jersey community say a dress shop took their money and didn’t deliver.

It’s turned some girl’s dream night into a nightmare situation.

Samantha Aparo is getting ready for prom. It’s stressful enough and the last thing she needed to worry about is not having a dress.

“Three weeks went by and no calls nothing. We started going by every day and nothing,” she said.

Samantha is just one of many teens who ordered and paid in full for a dress at Red Carpet Pageant and Prom in Wayne.

It didn’t take long for her to realize something was not right.

“Just not even answering the phone or the door or something,” she adds.

The store’s owner Patricia Dowling wouldn’t return phone calls and recently reported a robbery at her store of more than 40 dresses. But there have been other financial problems.

“It’s not the money I’ll take care of that. It it’s these other girls who don’t have a dress,” adds Frank Davis.

Davis’s daughter Mariah worked at Red Carpet for months and wasn’t getting paid so she quit.

He says Dowling has Cancer.

Eyewitness News called all of the numbers on the door. One was not in service and nobody answered the other.

Samantha is lucky. A company called http://www.promgirl.com/ heard about her prom problem and offered to help out.

She now has a dress and learned an important life lesson.

“Make sure you check up because you can’t just

Wayne store fails to deliver prom gowns

WAYNE — Tears and stress have replaced excitement and joy for many girls who ordered prom gowns from a New Jersey business with a history of complaints.

Police in Wayne have received numerous complaints from customers of Red Carpet Prom dress shop.

The customers say the store failed to fill orders, or delivered dresses that were damaged or the wrong size.

Owner Patricia Dowling said she’s trying to do all she can after she fell ill. She also reported a burglary, telling police $600 was stolen, along with 40 prom dresses.

However, complaints against Dowling and the business go back several years and include more than a dozen liens and judgments from another Red Carpet store she owned in Gloucester County.

PROM, IT TURNS OUT, CAN BE A PAIN IN THE POCKETBOOK

Whether prom draws up thoughts of high school sweethearts, embarrassing photos or goofy dance moves, for many the event is the quintessential rite of passage for American high school students.

Between tickets, elegant outfits and a slew of extra luxuries to make the night memorable, prom also has a reputation as one of the biggest price tags of senior year.

And a survey released in the last month said that price tag is only growing — to more than $1,000 per prom-goer.

Yet local students and the teachers who help plan the proms at area high schools said that number is not in line with local spending.

“What? That’s nuts,” was the reaction from Keene High School’s senior class advisers, Kimberly J. Simpson and Jessica H. Smith.

Keene High students are nowhere near that range, they said.

According to a survey by Visa Inc., American families will spend an average of $1,078 each on prom this year, up from the $807 average spent in 2011.

The Visa survey also found that spending will vary by region, with families in the Northeast and South outspending their Western and Midwestern counterparts. In fact, the survey results say that Northeastern families will spend an average of $1,944, nearly double the $1,047 that Southern families will spend.

The survey is based on 1,000 random phone interviews conducted between March 30 and April 1.

Emily J. Weber, co-adviser of Monadnock Regional High School’s junior class, which organizes the school’s senior prom, said proms in the Monadnock Region are not the same huge soirees that schools put on in big Northeastern cities like New York and Boston.

“Kids can spend as much or as little as they want … it kind of runs the gamut of what they want to do,” she

“Prom Dress? Or Diapers?”

Florence Brown never became a “statistic.” She returned to a city high school to tell teen moms they, too, can beat the odds.

As a teen Brown went to Polly T. McCabe, New Haven’s alternative public high school for pregnant students. She made it to college and “turned my situation around.”

Brown returned to New Haven Academy Wednesday afternoon to help a new generation of high-schoolers avoid becoming a statistic too—the 60 percent of teen moms who drop out of school, and sacrifice later success as adults.

Brown spoke at for a teen pregnancy awareness program as a part of Mercedes Dunkley’s “Women Empowerment” Future Project. New Haven Academy is one of several schools in the country taking part in the Future Project, an experiment in enlisting a city’s adults in helping high-schoolers develop community projects. (Click here and here for previous stories on the Future Project and Dunkley’s project.).

Wednesday’s program began with 35 students, parents, and Future Project coaches choosing different teen pregnancy and motherhood situations on a card. They broke up into small groups and discussed what to do.

After a group discussion of all of the situations, five teen moms spoke candidly about the struggles in their daily lives, the challenges of balancing education and motherhood, and the varying support from their family and “baby daddies”.

Jessica Boria, pregnant with her second child, is 17 and in 11th grade at Polly McCabe. “I’m going to finish school because I know I need to do the right things for my kids, so they can have a better future, and raise them better than what I’m doing,” she said.

“Don’t get pregnant in high school. It’s not cute, and it’s not fun—trust me, I know,” she said.

She regularly steals the limelight on the red carpet in a show-stopping gown.

But it looks like we’ll know exactly what Kelly Brook will be wearing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival after she posted her outfit fitting for the event online.

In a series of Instagram photos linked on her Twitter page, the 32-year-old modelled a selection of dresses and other ensembles.

Among the outfits she showcased during a one-to-one with her personal stylist, she tried on a gold prom dress, a floor-length glittering silver number and a pretty daytime white sundress.

So we can look forward to seeing some of her extensive fashion collection on the red carpet at Cannes when she jets to French Riviera this weekend.

B.C. teachers, employers attempt to spell out ‘work’

B.C. teachers and their employers found themselves in a familiar setting Friday: Split on what is the definition of work and back at the B.C. Labour Relations Board.

The teachers recent refusals on extracurricular activities are treading into strike waters, according to the B.C. Public School Employers Association. The B.C. Teachers Federation, however, insisted their call to cease the volunteer work is within their right and not in violation of the Education Improvement Act that forced teachers back into the classroom in March.

“The concerted withdrawal of such services satisfies the definition of a strike, said BCPSEA lead council Delayne Sartison.

She added that if a teacher agreed to a volunteer position after hours “it’s part of their work.

Friday was the first of several days of hearings at the Labour Relations Board, which is expected to resume after the holiday weekend on Tuesday.

The BCPSEA described “chaos in B.C. classrooms, saying the conditions have worsened since the initial stages of the labour dispute.

“During Phase 1, at least people knew what the rules were, Sartison said. “Now there’s a new refusal [by teachers] every day.

Sartison continued on a list of actions by local unions to cease extracurricular activities, which, she argued, amounts to a strike during an imposed six month “cool-down period scheduled to end August.

At issue, argued to BCTF counsel Craig Davis, is what responsibilities are defined as work.

“You can’t look at a strike accusation unless you look at what is work, Davis said

He insisted any activity after the day’s last bell is volunteer work.

The attorney back his claim with a collective agreement between Surrey teachers and their employers.

The BCTF said they will likely argue the constitutionality of Bill C-22, back-to-work legistlation introduced by the B.C. Liberal government, in June.

Davis believes the tact is one of three courses of action the union has at

Customers Say Wayne Dress Shop Failed To Deliver Prom Gowns

WAYNE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — What a nightmare.

It’s prom season and as many as 40 high school girls in New Jersey are in a panic after claiming to have never received the dream dresses they ordered from the Red Carpet Prom dress shop in Wayne.

Other customers claim the shop delivered dresses that were damaged or the wrong size.

1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reports

“I fell in love with this dress and now it’s not here,” Crystal Rivera said.

“They were pretty much running us around,” Pequannock High School senior Brielle Kievit said. “I don’t think the dress ever got ordered to be honest with you.”

Kievit will make it to her prom Friday night in a borrowed yellow dress, not the black and silver gown she ordered from the shop.

Shop owner Patricia Dowling told a local newspaper that she had fallen ill over the past month, leaving her unable to work. Dowling also claims she was the victim of a burglary on Wednesday in which 40 prom dresses — worth approximately $20,000 — and $600 were apparently stolen.

Police have stepped in to help, but so far detectives have found no evidence of a burglary.

“We were able to contact seamstress here and she has 18 of the dresses,” Wayne Police Detective Capt. Jim Clarke said. “It depends on how this turns out whether it was a good report or false report made to us.”

A note on the door of the Wayne shop said the store is closed because of medical issues. CBS 2′s Christine Sloan was unable to contact Dowling. There is a phone number on the door, but when Sloan called it went straight to voice mail.

Dowling’s former partner, who owns another dress shop, has filed a lawsuit against her. She spoke
